THE FOLDED SPACE

OBSERVED REVISED PRACTICES

Due to decrease in frequency of buses, people started using auto for travel. The bus stop thus remained unused. During covid the bus stop was used by homeless for shelter

A school was converted into a vaccination center.  The school provided two rooms for vaccination among which one was used as waiting room and the other was used by doctor for vaccination. Position of benches in waiting area remained unchanged and benches were stacked in one corner to clear space for vaccination.

SITE

Since bus stop and vaccination both requires a waiting space, the location of bus stop and area behind it which is currently used as a storage space for construction materials  was selected and redesigned for the project. Also, the bus stop is situated at a junction of three roads so the area is a quite crowdy space. The idea was to organize and assist the queueing area for bus stop with waiting area for vaccination. Also, the space will be used for storage of construction materials after pandemic.

PROJECT

Project Folded Space is an attempt to converge covid relief and space retirement for homeless. The aim was to make the two activities should happen simultaneously but at the same time should not merge into one another. This was achieved by elevating the vaccination area and extending the plinth outwards to incorporate sleeping space. In the redesigned structure the bus stop occupies the front part facing the road with vaccination center and sleeping area behind it. Originally the storage area was rectangular in space within which efforts were made to create folds to occupy sleeping area and small courtyards. Since the doctor’s room is quite closed entity it is provided with courtyards views on two of its sides. The space has also been provided with two toilets, one which is accessible from inside i.e., vaccination area and other from outside i.e., sleeping area. Attempt has also been made to including skylights over waiting area. The project includes a flat ceiling over the vaccination area and sloping roof over sleeping area. Furthermore, plastic rolled sheets are used for protection against rain over sleeping area and a ramp is provided for wheelchairs during pandemic. Also, since the space will be used for storage of construction materials after pandemic the ramp will help in loading and unloading.
